UCCS in Eighth Place After First Two Rounds of SoCal Intercollegiate
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. -- Tyler Bishop shot a 5-over par 145 Monday to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs into eighth place after two rounds of the 58th Southern California Intercollegiate Championship at Marbella Country Club.
The Mountain Lions were in fifth place after Monday's first round, just three shots off the lead, after shooting a 287. But the inevitable rust of a cold-weather school playing its first tournament of the spring showed in the second round as UCCS posted a 99 to slip a full 20 shots behind first-place Lynn.
Nova Southeastern is in second at 572, six strokes behind Lynn. Those two are followed by St. Edward's (577), Washburn (578) and Western Washington (578).
UCCS is tied with Cal State-San Bernardino at 586.
Todd Napikowski and Eric Winder each shot a 146, one stroke behind Bishop and tied for 20th overall. Brian Morfeld came in at 155 and David Cosel carded a 159 despite a solid 72 in the first round.
The SoCal Intercollegiate is among the most prestigious Division II events each year. This year, nine Top 25 teams are in the field, including Nova Southeastern (4), Western Washington (5), Chico State (6), St. Edward's (7), Central Oklahoma (10), Abilene Christian (14), Washburn (18), UCCS (19) and Lynn (22).
The third, and final, round will be played on Tuesday.
