UCCS golf drops to third after regional second round
A disappointing round of 10-over par Tuesday left the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in third place after two rounds of the NCAA Division II Northwest Regional Golf Championship at Fox Hollow Golf Club in Denver.
The Mountain Lions go into Wednesday's final round trailing Western New Mexico by 10 strokes and second-place Colorado State-Pueblo by three strokes.
Only the winner of the tournament is likely to advance to the national championships, which will be held May 22-25 at Allendale, Mich. While there are eight at-large berths available, the Northwest Region is usually not considered strong enough to get one.
Eric Winder led UCCS with an even-par 71, while Kyle Logan finished one stroke back and Trent Daum shot a 75. The Mountain Lions' top two scorers in the first round, Ross McDermott and Tyler Bishop, struggled Tuesday with rounds of 76 and 79 respectively.
Winder had four birdies, including one on his final hole of the day, to offset his four bogeys.
Bishop, who started on No. 10, had a double-bogey on No. 5 and a triple-bogey on No. 9 to waste an even-par first nine. Daum also saw a promising round go awry by going 4-over par on the final five holes. He also had been even par to that point.
As a team, UCCS scored 6-over par on the final nine holes since Bishop's score could be discarded.
