UCCS in second after first round at regional

Tyler Bishop and Ross McDermott each shot a 1-under par 70 Monday to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to second place after one round of the NCAA Division II Northwest Regional Golf Tournament at Fox Hollow Golf Club in Denver.

The Mountain Lions trail Western New Mexico, which shot a team score of 286, by one stroke going into Tuesday's second round. The third and final round will be played on Wednesday.

Colorado State-Pueblo shot a 295 to hold on to third, while Fort Lewis was in fourth at 298.

Bishop birdied both par 5s on the back nine as well as the par-4 ninth to offset bogeys on Nos. 2 and 15. McDermott recorded five birdies and four bogeys. The duo are in a five-way tie for the top individual score.

Eric Winder double-bogeyed No. 1 but recovered to shoot even par the rest of the way to finish with a 73 for UCCS. Kyle Logan was next for the Mountain Lions at 74 and Trent Daum shot a 75.

The winning team will advance to the NCAA Division II National Golf Championship on May 22-24 in Allendale, Mich.
