Golf team tabbed No. 1 in preseason poll

By Doug Fitzgerald published September 7, 2006

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs menâ€TMs golf team was chosen to win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference according the annual preseason coachesâ€TM poll.

The Mountain Lions received five of the eight first-place votes and 12 points overall. Regis was second with one first-place vote and 17 points. Colorado State-Pueblo (23 points) was third and RMAC newcomer Western New Mexico (24) was fourth.

“It speaks volumes about our program,” said Trujillo. “After finishing last at regionals, we were surprised to be picked in the No. 1 spot. This shows that the other coaches believe that we will rebound and put a competitive team out there.”

RMAC coaches submit their votes by ranking the teams 1-7. They cannot vote for their own team or their own players.

Mark Vallee from Colorado Mines was named the RMAC Preseason Golfer of the Year. Joining him on the Preseason All-RMAC team were Miles Philpy of Regis, John Scott of UCCS, Mark Moller of Nebraska-Kearney and Greg Pool of Western New Mexico.

The Mountain Lions will open the season with the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at the U.S. Air Force Academyâ€TMs Eisenhower Blue Golf Course. UCCS is the only non-Division I team in the 18-school field. Ten of the Division I teams are ranked in the top 50 nationally.
