Kephart takes fourth at City Championship
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs golfer Alex Kephart took fourth place in the Colorado Springs City Championship, which was played Saturday through Monday at Patty Jewett Golf Course.
The sophomore from Colorado Springsâ€TM Liberty High School shot a final-round 74 Monday and finished with a three-round score of 217, two strokes behind third-place Steve Ivan.
“Alex had a great weekend and played well,†said UCCS golf coach Phil Trujillo. “He was disappointed that he didn't place higher but was satisfied with his play.â€
Mike Harrington shot a 7-under par 65 Monday to give him an aggregate score of 201 and win his third straight City Championship, the first time the trifecta has been accomplished. Todd Thompson was second at 208.
Kephart can attribute some of his success to good genetics. His father, Gary Kephart, won the Senior Flight with a three-round score of 224.
Trujillo was pleased to see the younger Kephartâ€TMs game come together.
“He's been struggling a bit but recently started hitting the ball better,†said Trujillo. “It's good for us that he's coming around with the start of the season one week away.â€
Kephart and the rest of the Mountain Lions will open their 2006-07 season at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. UCCS will play two rounds at the Air Force Academyâ€TMs Eisenhower Golf Club Blue Course and the third and final round on Sunday. Play both days is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
