UCCS falls in regional, drops Steel and Silver point
A disappointing final round at the Northwest regional Tournament Wednesday doomed the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to not only an eighth-place finish, but the Mountain Lions also surrendered a point to Colorado State-Pueblo in the Steel and Silver Series.
The Mountain Lions shot a third-round score of 315, pushing them one stroke behind seventh-place CSU-Pueblo and giving the Thunderwolves their only point in six head-to-head tournaments. UCCSâ€TM lead in the rivalry series was reduced to 22-16 with from 0-4 points at stake in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Softball Tournament this weekend. Five points will be awarded for the school with the highest cumulative student-athlete grade-point average.
St. Cloud State earned a berth in the national championship tournament with a runaway 26-stroke victory at the Northwest Regional. Minnesota State Mankato was second and Regis was third.
Neil Huffakerâ€TMs 76 was the best round shot by a UCCS player on Wednesday. Huffaker was the Mountain Lionsâ€TM best scorer in each of the tournamentâ€TMs three rounds and finished with in eighth place overall with a 9-over par 222.
Chase Wortmann was second for UCCS for both the third round and cumulatively with a 77 and 229 respectively. Kyle Logan came in at 232, John Scott scored 242 and Chris Smith has a 268.
