UCCS in 14th after first round of Grand Canyon Invitational
Chase Wortmann shot a 3-under par 69 in the second round of the Grand Canyon Invitational but that was enough to lift the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to 14th place after Mondayâ€TMs play.
The Mountain Lions shot 303 in the first round and 297 in the second round, both played Monday at the Estrella Ranch Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz. The scores gave them a comfortable seven-stroke cushion over 15th-place Southeaster Oklahoma and a 14-stroke lead over 16th-place Fort Lewis.
Moving up in Tuesdayâ€TMs third and final round will be difficult, though. UCCS trails 13th-place Northeastern State by nine strokes and 12th-place Western New Mexico by ten strokes.
Wortmann shot a 3-over par 75 in Mondayâ€TMs first round, making him even par for the tournament and tied for 14th place. Tournament leader Ryan Thornberry of Cal State-Stanislaus is 7-under par.
Chris Smith was second among UCCS golfers at 147 (3-over par). He was followed by Alex Kephart (154), Kyle Logan (155) and John Scott (156).
