UCCS holds onto third, but deficit grows

By Doug Fitzgerald published May 3, 2005

Four University of Colorado at Colorado Springs golfers birdied the par-5 No. 7 hole at Dakota Dunes Golf Club in Dakota Dunes, S.D. Tuesday as the Mountain Lions rallied to retain third place at the NCAA Division II Northwest Regional.

The Mountain Lions began play on the back nine and had slipped to fourth place with three holes remaining. John Scott, Chase Wortmann, Adam Jardon and Eric Winder all birdied No. 7, though, and UCCS moved ahead of St. Cloud State.

The bad news for the Mountain Lions was that the deficit between them and tournament leading Minnesota State Mankato widened. UCCS came into the second round trailing by 16 strokes and ended it behind by 22. Since its unlikely that a team from the Northwest Region will get one of the four at-large berths to nationals, the only avenue for competing for a national title is to win the regional.

That leaves UCCS with a daunting deficit to overcome going into Wednesdayâ€TMs third and final round.

Of course, the Mountain Lions could hope that Mankato falls apart like Nebraska-Kearney did on Tuesday. The Lopers entered the day in second place, but shot a dismal 327 to fall all the way to seventh.

Conditions were much improved from the rainy, windy mess the teams encountered on Monday and the scores reflected the change. The teams averaged a score of 332.75 on Monday. Tuesdayâ€TMs average was more than 16 strokes better.

Scott led the Mountain Lions Tuesday with a 4-over par 76 and is in eighth place individually at 12-over for the tournament. Wortmann recovered from a disappointing first round to shoot 6-over par in the second round. Neil Huffaker (80) and Winder (81) also carded scoring rounds for UCCS. Jardon, who shot the teamâ€TMs best round on Monday, faded to an 85 with seven bogeys, two double-bogeys and a triple-bogey.

Colorado State-Pueblo shot the dayâ€TMs best round, a 308, to jump from fifth to second. The Thunderwolves lead UCCS by four strokes.
