UCCS golf in third at regional
Adam Jardon shot a 79 Monday as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs finished the first round of the NCAA Division II Northwest Regional in third place.
The Mountain Lions trail Minnesota State Mankato by 16 strokes and Nebraska-Kearney by six strokes.
A triple bogey on No. 6 pushed Jardonâ€TMs score to 5-over par on the front nine, but birdies on both of the back nineâ€TMs par 5s (Nos. 12 and 18) helped him finish the round at 7-over par. His round was good enough for eighth place individually on the challenging 7,165-yard layout at the Dakota Dunes Golf Club in Dakota Dunes, S.D.
John Scott had an outstanding round working but bogeys on three of the final six holes pushed him to an 80. He ended the first round tied for 11th individually.
The rest of the UCCS squad was unable to match Jardon and Scott. Chase Wortmann (85), Neil Huffaker (88) and Eric Winder (90) combined for four birdies, 16 bogeys and 12 holes of double-bogey or worse.
Three holes gave the Mountain Lions particular difficulty. UCCS combined to shoot 10-over par on No. 6, 9-over par on No. 9 and 10-over par on No. 13. The three holes accounted for nearly half of the teamâ€TMs over-par strokes (29-of-62).
Minnesota State-Mankatoâ€TMs Matt Dawson shot the dayâ€TMs best round, a 2-over par 74.
Mondayâ€TMs play, which was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. CST, was delayed an hour due to frost. The second round will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
