Mountain Lions battle elite field in final round

By Doug Fitzgerald published October 12, 2004

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs shot a 298 Tuesday, tied for the sixth-best round of the day, but was unable to overcome a disastrous start and finished 13th at Chico State Wells Fargo Golf Tournament.

The 13-team field at the Butte Creek Country Club in Chico, Calif., included each of the top six-ranked Division II teams in the nation and eight of the Top 20. Cal State-Monterey Bay, ranked 34th nationally, was the closest team in ranking to No. 64 CU-Colorado Springs.

In the final round, CU-Colorado Springs scored better than No. 1 Hawaii-Hilo, No. 8 Cal State-Chico and No. 15 Sonoma State. The Mountain Lions also tied No. 2 UC-San Diego in the final round.

The Mountain Lions shot a last-place 310 in Mondayâ€TMs first round and a 12th-place 311 in the second round, both played on Monday, to dig a hole from which they were unable to escape.

No. 4-ranked Cal State-Bakersfield won the tournament with a three-round score of 866. No. 5 St. Martins was second at 867 and Hawaii-Hilo was third at 874.

Neil Huffaker and John Scott each shot a 1-over par 73 in the third round for the Mountain Lions, while Mark Ruybalid was one stroke behind.

Huffakerâ€TMs three-round total of 227 was CU-Colorado Springsâ€TM best and was 36th overall. Scott and Ruybalid came in at 228 and 229 respectively. Trent Daum (239) and Chase Wortmann (240) also competed for CU-Colorado Springs.
