Van Etten helps golf team climb to 14th
Nick Van Etten shot a 3-under par 69 Monday to help the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs golf team climb into a tie for 14th at the Family Motors Invitational at Bakersfield, Calif.
The Mountain Lions shot 297 as a team in Tuesdayâ€TMs final round, three strokes better than their best round Monday.
Van Ettenâ€TMs strong final round helped erase the sting of a disappointing first round and gave him a three-round score of 228, tied for 65th overall. Trent Daum led CU-Colorado Springs at 224, while J.P. Wertz was one stroke behind. Mark Ruybalid and Chase Wortmann each shot 234.
With one of the strongest fields in the tournament's history on hand at Seven Oaks Country Club, the No. 2 ranked Cal State Bakersfield won its sixth consecutive team title with a three-round score of 841. No. 1 ranked Chico State was second, 10 shots back, while The Master's College used Tuesday's best round of 11-under 277 to catch Cal State San Marcos in third place.
No. 5 ranked UC San Diego was 23 shots off the pace in fifth place.
UC San Diego's Brian Duckworth used a round of 7-under 65 to come from off the leader board after two rounds to take the individual title. Duckworth sat in a tie for 15th after two rounds â€" seven strokes off the lead â€" but stormed back to win by two strokes over Cal Satte Bakersfieldâ€TMs D.J. Fernando. Bakersfieldâ€TMs Kevin Starr finished tied for third with Grand Canyon's Bryan Manning and Chico Stateâ€TMs Mitch Berg at 6-under 210.
