Men's golf in 15th after first day of Bakersfield tournament

Trent Daum and J.P. Wertz each shot two-round scores of 148 to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs golf team to 15th place going into Tuesdayâ€TMs final round of the Family Motors Invitational in Bakersfield, Calif.

Daum and Wertz each shot a 1-over par 73 in Mondayâ€TMs morning round at Seven Oaks Country Club. They each followed that with a 3-over par 75 in the afternoon round to put them in a tie for 42nd overall.

Chase Wortmann (154), Mark Ruybalid (159) and Nick Van Etten also competed for the Mountain Lions, who are three strokes behind 14th-place Cal State-Dominguez Hills and seven strokes behind 13th-place Western New Mexico.

Host Cal State-Bakersfield, which is ranked No. 2 nationally, leads the tournament after setting a 36-hole record by shooting a 559. CSUB set the previous 36-hole record of 560 twice, matching that total in 2000 and 2003.

The Roadrunners lead second place Cal State San Marcos by seven strokes. Chico State, the nationâ€TMs top-ranked team, and No. 5 ranked UC San Diego are in third place, 12 strokes behind CSUB.

The 2004 field is one of the strongest in tournament history. Four of the top five teams in the nation (Chico, CSUB, No. 4 Stanislaus and UCSD), five of the top 10 (No. 10 Western Washington) are in the 17-team field

Cal State Stanislausâ€TM Ryan Thornberry shot a 5-under par 139 for the top individual score.
