Westminster to Join RMAC in 2015-16 as 16th Member
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs will have a new conference opponent starting in the 2015-16 academic year when Westminster College rejoins the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as the 16th member. The invitation was offered by the RMAC Presidents Council during the NCAA Convention in January, and accepted by Westminster earlier this month.
The Mountain Lions will face the Griffins in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The Griffins will begin RMAC competition in fall 2015 pending acceptance into the NCAA application process.
"The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference is excited to add Westminster College as its 16th member institution," said RMAC Presidents Council Chairman Dr. Stephen Jordan. "We support Westminster's commitment to NCAA Division II and the RMAC and look forward to welcoming their great history and tradition, along with their recent academic and athletic success."
Westminster was a member of the RMAC from 1967 through 1979 and left the conference when the institution dropped varsity athletics. The Griffins restarted their athletic programs in 1999 and are currently members of the NAIA's Frontier Conference. The college is located in Salt Lake City and has an enrollment of 3,100 students.
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in Colorado Springs, is one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university fields 14 athletic teams, is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and competes in NCAA Division II. UCCS offers 37 bachelor's degrees, 19 master's and five doctoral degrees. UCCS enrolls about 10,500 students on campus annually and another 2,000 in online programs.
