RMAC Welcomes South Dakota Mines as 15th School

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs will have a new conference opponent starting in the 2014-15 academic year when South Dakota School of Mines & Technology joins the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as the 15th member. The decision was made by the RMAC Presidents Council last week at the NCAA Convention in San Diego.

The Mountain Lions will face the Hardrockers in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country and track and field, men's and women's golf, volleyball and men's soccer. South Dakota Mines is in its first year of full NCAA Division II membership in the 2013-14 academic year.

"The RMAC is pleased that the South Dakota School of Mines has accepted our invitation to join the conference," said RMAC Presidents' Council Chairman Stephen Jordan on Saturday. "Mines is a great fit academically and athletically with the fourteen members of NCAA Division II's most historic athletic conference."

South Dakota Mines men's soccer has one season left under contract with the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and will not join as RMAC members in that sport until the fall 2015 season. All other sports will be integrated into RMAC schedules as timing permits. The Hardrockers were NCAA Division II independents this season after completing the transition from the Dakota Athletic Conference of the NAIA.

South Dakota Mines is located in Rapid City, S.D., and is roughly 50 miles east of Black Hills State and 100 miles north of Chadron, Neb.  The school has an enrollment of 2,640 students. With 15 schools, the number of RMAC schools is the highest since 1969 when the conference had 16 members.

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in Colorado Springs, is one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university fields 14 athletic teams, is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and competes in NCAA Division II. UCCS offers 37 bachelor's degrees, 19 master's and five doctoral degrees. UCCS enrolls about 10,500 students on campus annually and another 2,000 in online programs.
