UCCS clinches Steel & Silver Series
The Ent Federal Credit Union Trophy will stay put for at least one more year.
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs officially clinched the 2009-10 Steel & Silver Series Tuesday as the Mountain Lions' men's golf team scored a 24-stroke victory over Colorado State-Pueblo at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Spring Championship, which concluded Tuesday. The win gave UCCS a 24-12 lead in the points standings with only nine points yet to be awarded.
UCCS has now won the series in each of its five years of existence. The Ent Federal Credit Union Trophy will be officially presented to UCCS chancellor Pamela Shockley-Zalabak in Colorado Springs at a date yet to be determined.
This season's Steel & Silver Series was on a new, winner-take-all points system. In each of the 10 intercollegiate athletics programs that both schools sponsor: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's golf, women's cross country, softball, volleyball, and women's indoor and outdoor track and field - the school that earned the most wins in head-to-head competition was awarded four points. If the head-to-head competitions were split evenly, each school was awarded two points. The school with the best cumulative grade point average among student-athletes in the school's common sports will also be awarded five points once final grades are in.
UCCS took home four points each for men's golf, women's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer, and volleyball as well as two points each for men's basketball and women's softball. CSU-Pueblo won four points for indoor track and women's basketball and two points each for men's basketball and softball. The points for outdoor track and GPA have yet to be awarded.
The school with the most points at the end of the academic year will be awarded the Ent Federal Credit Union Trophy, with the presentation taking place in the home city of the winning school.
