Doug Fitzgerald, the sports information director for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, placed nationally in three categories of the 2008 Fred S. Stabley Sr. Writing Contest, which is sponsored by the College Sports Information Director's Association (CoSIDA).

Fitzgerald finished first in District 7 for his entries in the athlete profile, event coverage, and historical feature categories.

The first-place stories in each category from each of the NCAA's eight districts are sent to nationals. The winning story in each category is then judged for the national story of the year, which was won by Bob Beretta of Army for his story "A Michie Night to Remember."

This is not the first time Fitzgerald has been honored for writing excellence. In 2006, he placed first in the nation in the event coverage category for his story titled "Cleland Punishes Screwball in UCCS Sweep." He has also placed second, third and fifth nationally for other past entries.

While the national ranking for each of Fitzgerald's three district winners is not yet known, they were not among the top three.
