Fitzgerald wins J.W. Campbell Award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Doug Fitzgerald, the Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is the winner of the J.W. Campbell, Sports Information Director (SID) of the Year in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for 2006-07.

The award is voted on by the 14 sports information directors in the RMAC. Fitzgerald has been the SID at UCCS since 1999. In 2006, Fitzgerald earned first place in the nation from CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) for event coverage in the Fred Stabley Sr., writing contest. Fitzgerald won the same award in 2004.

Also in 2006, Fitzgerald earned 5th place from CoSIDA for his promotional poster "You
Can't Hide Your Lion Eyes".

In addition to his duties at UCCS, Fitzgerald also volunteered his services at the RMAC volleyball championships in Silver City, N.M., the RMAC basketball championships in Pueblo, and the RMAC softball championships in Grand Junction.

The other finalists for this year's award were Tish Elliott from Mesa State College and Greg Murphy of Colorado Mines. The winner of the award is not eligible for the award the following year. J.W. Campbell was a long-time Sports Information Director at Western State College. Campbell was also the assistant to the Western State President, an assistant professor, teaching seven separate disciplines and was the school's information director. He also co-authored two books and wrote numerous articles for magazines and trade publications. Campbell passed away March 26, 2000

Campbell was a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), receiving a lifetime achievement award from the group in 1999. He also served on the Harlon Hill Award and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame selection committees and was an ordained minister. Campbell will be inducted into the RMAC Hall of Fame of July 14, 2007.

Fitzgerald will be recognized at the 2007 RMAC Hall of Fame and Awards banquet on Saturday, July 14th at the SilverWood Hotel and Conference Center in Colorado Springs.
