Three selected to attend NCAA Action Academy

By Doug Fitzgerald published February 15, 2005

Senior woman administrator/compliance coordinator Sarah Cartwright, volleyball player Jill Wrenn and cross country/track athlete Jason Braun will be attending the NCAA Division II Student-Athlete Leadership Action Academy on Feb. 18-20.

The academy will be held at the Westin City Center in Dallas, Texas. The selection process was managed at the campus level according to NCAA established criteria. Selection was based on a diverse representation of experiences.

The Action Academy was developed so Division II student-athletes and administrators would have the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and become more familiar with Division II issues. Each academy will develop student-athletes, not only in academics and athletics, but also as leaders on campus and in their community. Each institution has been placed in one of six geographic regions. Two Action Academies will be held each year with every Division II institution participating within a three-year cycle. CU-Colorado Springs was invited to send three representatives this year.

"We're really excited that we were invited to attend the academy," said Cartwright. "We look forward to bringing back the skills we learn and implementing them at CU-Colorado Springs."

Criteria for participant selection have been established to encourage diversity and promote leadership development. Institutions are required to select two student-athletes and a coach or administrator to attend the academy. Of the three participants, one individual must be an ethnic minority or international representative. The institution's participants must include one female and one male student-athlete. The student-athlete participants must represent different sports teams.

As part of the program, participants will develop their leadership skills and address an important NCAA Division II Strategic Plan initiative. Once the team of participants returns to campus, they will implement a team-directed project created at the academy.
