Kirkham appointed chair of regional committee
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs announced Monday that athletic director Stephen Kirkham had been appointed chairman of the North Central Region Women's Basketball committee.
"It's an honor to represent the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and the North Central Region at the national level with the NCAA," said Kirkham.
The committee determines weekly regional rankings and also awards at-large berths to the NCAA regional tournament. As chairman, Kirkham also will serve on the national committee.
"The North Central Region has been the most successful women's basketball region in Division II," said Kirkham. "The region had produced nine national champions in the past 14 years and has been the runner-up three times."
Kirkham, who has served on the regional committee for the past three years, was a basketball coach for 27 years prior to being named athletic director at CU-Colorado Springs. He was the head coach at Mesa State College in Grand Junction for 16 years, where he was the winningest women's coach in RMAC history. His 299 wins ranks No. 35 all-time among Division II coaches.
