Mountain Lions ranked 35th in Director's Cup rankings
On the strength of Top 20 finishes by both its men's and women's cross country teams, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs finished the fall sports seasons ranked No. 35 in the United States Sports Academy Director's Cup Standings.
Director's Cup points are awarded based on each institution's finish in a predetermined number of sports. A maximum of 14 sports can be counted per year in Division II, which includes 283 institutions.
CU-Colorado Springs ranks behind three other Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools: Adams State (third), Western State (seventh) and Metro State (25th). Nebraska-Kearney (45th) is also among the Top 50.
While some points could be added by the indoor track teams during the winter season, the spring sports are where the Mountain Lions hope to move up in the standings. The women's softball team was ranked No. 7 nationally in the preseason poll and is a national championship contender. Barring a dramatic letdown in the final qualifying tournament, the men's golf team should advance to the regional tournament, the winner of which goes on to nationals. The outdoor track teams could pick up some national points on the strength on their distance runners and steeplechasers. Even the men's and women's tennis teams are potentially strong enough to advance past the conference level in the postseason.
