UCCS men's tennis team conquered both Mesa State (6-3) and Emporia State (7-2) on Friday

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs men's tennis team won two matches on Friday, defeating both the Mesa State Mavericks (6-3) and the Emporia State Hornets (7-2) at the Broadmoor.

The Mountain Lions improved their record to 10-8 on the season and 2-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They have one more match left against Colorado Christian on Wednesday before going into the RMAC Tournament.

In singles play, Marc Knutilla had a long day when both of his matches went to three sets. Knutilla lost the first match against the Mavericks' Adam Byrne with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 1-0, but won his second match to the Hornet's Chris Irick 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5).

Also in singles play at No. 1 Sean Voorhies increased his winning streak to three games, where he defeated Mesa State's Rich Tifft with a score of 6-4, 6-4 and Emporia State's Carlos Aguirre 6-3, 6-1. Eric Rivera and Jason Schultz both won their matches against Mesa State and Emporia State. At No. 6 Eddie Weston defeated Emporia's Tim Garner 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles play Eric Rivera and Jason Schultz were the only Mountain Lions team to win both their doubles matches in an 8-4 win over Mesa State and an 8-2 win over Emporia State. Marc Knutilla and Ken Huston defeated the Maverick's Adam Byrne and Cory Rockow with a score of 9-7. At No. 2 Sean Voorhies and Josh Johnson beat the Hornetâ€TMs Ross Hougland and Chris Irick 8-6.
