Two matches too much for one day

COLORADO SPRINGS - Two matches in one day proved to be too much for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs men's tennis team.

Playing their second match of the day, the Mountain Lions were thumped 7-2 by the Winona State Warriors Tuesday at the Broadmoor. UCCS had beaten Dallas Baptist earlier Tuesday.

UCCS moved the match from the Country Club of Colorado to the Broadmoor in an attempt to escape the icy winds that buffeted them throughout the morning match. What the Mountain Lions couldn't escape, though, was the clock. Frigid temperatures forced the morning match to be delayed an hour, and when the matches went long, UCCS was forced to head to the afternoon match without its scheduled lunch. The players instead grabbed a bagel or doughnut left over from breakfast.

The Mountain Lions also couldn't escape a tough Winona State squad that improved to 10-4 with the win.

Sean Voorhies and Josh Johnson got UCCS (7-4) off to a good start with an 8-5 win over Will Nagel and Kyle Buchmeier at No. 1 doubles. The Warriors countered with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles and an 8- shellacking at No. 3.

Voorhies dropped a gut-wrenching 10-9 third-set tiebreaker in falling to Winona State's Gage Davidson at No. 1 singles. Voorhies dropped the first set 6-4 before roaring back to take the second 6-1, setting up the tiebreaker.

Jason Schultz had identical scores to Voorhies in the first two sets before also dropping the third-set tiebreaker.

Eric Rivera gave the Mountain Lions their only singles point with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) decision over Buchmeier.
