UCCS tennis falls to Division I Air Force

By Doug Fitzgerald published March 3, 2006

Marc Knutila took his singles match to a tiebreaker game but the Division I Air Force Falcons took a 7-0 victory over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Friday afternoon at the Air Force Academy.

With Air Force leading 5-0 and no chance for UCCS to come back, the coaches agreed to have the Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches be decided by a single, eight-game set similar to those used in doubles play. Knutila, a sophomore from Albuquerque, took Air Forces Greg Ferry to a tiebreaker game before succumbing 9-8.

At No. 1 singles, Sean Voorhies was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Air Force's Shannon Buck, marking Voorhies' second straight defeat after opening the season 6-0. UCCS Josh Johnson absorbed his first singles defeat of the season, falling to Keith Cronican 6-3, 6-4.

Air Force seniors Buck and Trevor Johnson won their ninth straight doubles match with an 8-4 decision over Voorhies and Josh Johnson. UCCS' Eric Rivera and Jason Schultz suffered their first setback of the season at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 loss to Robby Alexander and Ferry. Since the match was played under NCAA Division I scoring, only one point was awarded for doubles play, that point going to the team that wins at least two out of the three matches.
