Shorthanded Lions top CC

Due to injury, UCCS tennis coach Matt Hays was forced to institute a different lineup in the Mountain Lions' 6-3 win over Colorado College on Tuesday.

Senior Eric Rivera injured his ankle in the Mountain Lions' win over Mesa State over the weekend and will likely miss the rest of the season.

"The loss of Eric will be difficult," said Hays. "He is a team leader that pushes everyone to get better."

With the loss of Rivera, UCCS' No. 2 singles player, everyone was forced to play one spot higher than they had been. Freshman Marc Knutila, who hadn't yet played a match, was given his first opportunity at the No. 6 spot.

Knutila made the most of it. He teamed with Jason Bistani at No. 3 doubles to picked up the first win of his collegiate career. Knutila then turned around and won his first career singles match. Knutila dropped the first set of his No. 6 match to Andy Fox 5-7, but went won to win 6-3, 7-5.

"Marc has been at every practice and worked hard," said Hays. "He played very well today."

Filling Rivera's hole at the No. 2 spot was Travis Sellentin. Sellentin, who came into the match 7-2 at No. 3, picked up the win. Also moving up and winning was Jason Schultz, who won 6-3, 7-6 at the No. 3 spot.

Sean Voorhies increased his win streak at No. 1 singles to nine straight matches. Voorhies had been mowing people down lately but today he ran into stiff competition from CC's Naren Clark. Clark took the first set 6-3. It was the first time Voorhies had even lost a set all spring. He rebounded to win the final two sets 6-3, 7-6.

It was Mountain Lions' third straight win and their fifth win in their past seven matches.

"When something like this happens, and everyone has to move up a spot, you find out whether you are an average team or a good team," said Hays. "Today we looked good."
