Martell Leads Mountain Lions at Metro State Invitational
DENVER, Colo. - The No. 10 University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's cross country team finished second among six teams Saturday morning at the Metro State Invitational at Washington Park in Denver, Colo. Angie Martell led the pack with a time of 23 minutes, 30 seconds for a third-place finish on the six-kilometer course.
Martell ran the sixth-fastest time in the Invitational's history, while Veronica Sandoval placed one spot behind Martell and finished in 23:50 for the seventh-fastest time in the meet's history. The duo finished ahead of the top runners from RMAC schools Regis and Colorado Mines. Sam Bauer finished seventh overall and third for the Mountain Lions in 24:01, two seconds ahead of Alyssa Wendt. Lina Arista finished the scoring for UCCS with 24:18.
"The first mile the girls ran perfect," said Head Women's Cross Country Coach David Harmer. "We were within five points of Metro State who are ranked ninth in the country. Overall it was a good performance."
UCCS will begin the championship portion of the schedule on Oct. 26 at the RMAC Championships in Silver City, N.M.
