UCCS Finishes Second Among Division II Teams at Anderson Invite
SPOKANE, Wash. - Angie Martell finished third among Division II runners and No. 10 among all collegiate women to lead the No. 10 University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's cross country team at the NCAA Division II Preview Meet at the Plantes Ferry Athletic Complex. The Mountain Lions finished second among Division II teams and fourth among all collegiate teams.
Martell finished the six-kilometer course in 22 minutes, 19.37 seconds, on the same course that will be used in November for the national championships. She finished seven seconds ahead of teammate Veronica Sandoval, who was fifth among Division II finishers and No. 13 overall.
The third through fifth runners for the Mountain Lions finished within a nine-second span of each other. Lina Arista led the pack with her 22:55.67, followed by Alyssa Andrews' 22:57.85 and Alyssa Wendt's 23:04.33. The group of Mountain Lions finished No. 13 through No. 15 in the Division II results.
UCCS finished second among Division II teams, behind No. 6 Simon Fraser. The Mountain Lions finished ahead of Division I Washington State in the overall team standings, and within 40 points of Gonzaga. UCCS maintained better score against the Bulldogs after the first two runners from both teams before Gonzaga put through its next three runners ahead of the Mountain Lions' third runner.
The Mountain Lions will be off next weekend to prepare for the Metro State Invitational Oct. 5, in Denver, Colo.
