No. 8 Mountain Lions Host Rust Buster Saturday
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's cross country team has been training over the summer at higher levels than previous years to be ready to compete with the best teams in the country. Last year, the women's team finished No. 10 at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Their goal is to establish themselves as a top 10 team in the country again and show consistency, shooting for another top 10 finish this year.
Leading the way for the Mountain Lions will be Angie Martell and Veronica Sandoval, who are two of the top runners from last fall. Both were all RMAC and all-region runners last year. Overall, the women's team is returning six of the seven runners who competed at the national championships last season.
Alyssa Andrews is coming off a strong outdoor track season this spring where she finished No. 17 at the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Track & Field Championships, after setting new personal best in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs. Alyssa Wendt, Melanie Diep, Sam Bauer and Sarah Treese all set new bests at between 8000meter and 5,000-meter runs this past indoor and outdoor track seasons, and Ashley Benfield, who was the fourth scorer at the national cross country championships last fall, also returners for her last year before graduating next spring.
The women's team has added five new freshmen this fall. "The freshmen are working hard and following the advice from Coach Sara Kettelkamp and I, which is all we can ask from them at this stage of the season," said Women's Head Coach David Harmer.
UCCS opens the 2013 season with the Sixth Annual Rust Buster at Monument Valley Park. The women's race will begin at 10 a.m., in Colorado Springs.
