Cross Country, Harambee Foundation Hold "Four Miles for Kenya" Run July 14
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's and women's cross country teams, and the Harambee Foundation, will hold the "Four Miles for Kenya" race July 14 at the New Santa Fe Trailhead in Monument, Colo. The funds will be used to support the Cheptigit Primary School in Kaptagat, Kenya.
The four mile race will begin at 8 a.m., and will be an out and back event starting from Baptist Road and heading north. The entry fee is $30, and runners can register online or on race day. Groups of three runners who register together can enter the race for $20 each. Runners can also donate on the registration form to benefit the Pikes Peak Community Foundation to support relief efforts for the Black Forest Fire near the area of the race.
The Harambee Foundation was established by members of the UCCS cross country team who participated in a trip to Kenya during the 2012-13 winter break. Student-athletes Luke Dakin, Rob Scrivner and David Marino, and Head Coach Mark Misch, visited the Cheptigit Primary School during the trip and established the foundation to raise funds to hire additional teachers. The organization hosted a Kenyan Dinner Night in February that raised nearly $4,600 to hire seven teachers for a year and lower the number of students per teacher from 46 to 28.
