March 1 Dinner Caps UCCS Kenya Trip
This is the third of a three-part series detailing the UCCS men's cross country trip to Kenya during the winter break. For previous recaps of the Mountain Lions' trip to Kenya, visit the men's cross country page at GoMountainLions.com.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Over the last couple days the UCCS Cross Country team's trip to Kenya has been told, and their explorations revered. Like any great story however, en ending was needed and the team has a grand finale already in the works.
March 1st at 5:00 p.m. the team will be holding "Kenyan Dinner Night" at The Grace Place church - address can be found below - with all the proceeds going to benefit the Cheptigit Primary School. The school is part of the Uasin Gishu district in the Rift Valley province of Eldoret, Kenya.
With a current student-to-teacher ratio that would make even the boldest teacher cringe, the team knows their efforts to raise money are more than worth it.
"While we were there we visited the school all the kids go to. They have over 550 students and only 11 teachers for all of them," UCCS runner Robert Scrievner said.
"Any proceeds made that we make from this (the dinner) will be sent to that school to try and employee teachers and to try and raise the salary of the teachers that are already there, because they only make $47 dollars a month."
The numbers are astonishing. In Kenya a dollar a day is enough money for one person to live off but when a teacher has a family to take care of the meager salary becomes difficult to manage.
Hopefully the team's efforts and continued future relationship with the school will start to improve the schools financial footing - thus enabling effect education to continue to be available for all the children of Eldoret.
David Marino knows all to well how important an education at an early age is and wants to see these children enjoy the same opportunity U.S. students have.
"What we really want is to tie UCCS to Cheptigit Primary School. If you can get them when they're young they develop into an academic person."
