UCCS Moves into Nation's Top 10 for First Time in Program History
NEW ORLEANS - A victory at the Roy Griak Invitational last Saturday moved the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's cross country team in the nation's top 10 teams for the first time in program history with the release of the new U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national polls this morning. The Mountain Lions are ranked ninth for a five-spot improvement from last week's poll.
UCCS is one of four RMAC teams in the top 10 of the national rankings as the top conference squads were split between the Stanford Invitational, Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree and Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational. The Mountain Lions won the Maroon II race of the Griak Invitational for the second team victory of the season after a perfect score in the Colorado College Invitational on Sept. 15.
Emilio Trujillo has led the Mountain Lions at all three meets this season with individual titles at each race. He won last Saturday's race by a 12-second margin in a field of 36 teams and 430 runners.
UCCS will send runners to the Metro State Invitational on Saturday in the final non-championship event of the season. The Mountain Lions begin the championship schedule at home with the RMAC Championships on Oct. 20 in Monument Valley Park.
