Trujillo Leads #14 UCCS Men's Cross Country to Griak Team Title
SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Emilio Trujillo remained undefeated on the season with 25 minutes and 22.6 seconds to lead No. 14 University of Colorado Colorado Springs to the team win of the Maroon II race at the 27th Annual Roy Griak Invitational today at Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Trujillo won by nearly 12 seconds against Southwest Baptist's Phillip Miller. He narrowly held the lead against Miller at the five-kilometer mark before claiming his third victory of the season. Trujillo's time also would have placed him No. 25 in the Gold race held later in the day, featuring the Division I teams at the invitational.
Oliver Williams improved over the final three kilometers from No. 36 to finish No. 15 overall in 26:00.7 and second for the Mountain Lions. UCCS was the first team to place three runners when Mike English placed No. 24 overall and No. 19 among collegiate runners with 26:09.0.
Ryan Derrick finished No. 27 overall and ahead of any other team's fourth-place runner with 26:11.7. Sam Feldotto rounded out the scoring with 26:46.5 and in No. 51 overall.
The Mountain Lions won by 27 points against No. 25 Minnesota State for their second team victory of the season. The top five UCCS runners averaged 26:07 among the 36 teams and 430 individual runners.
Up Next: UCCS will send student-athletes to the Metro State Invitational next Saturday at Washington Park in Denver. The race will be the final regular season meet before the RMAC Championships on Oct. 20 in Monument Valley Park.
