NEW ORLEANS - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's cross country came in at No. 13 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason national rankings released late last week. It's the highest ranking for the Mountain Lions in the history of the national rankings.

The Mountain Lions are one of six RMAC teams ranked in the top 20 of the preseason national rankings. The rankings expanded out to include the top 35 teams in the national to reflect the expanded field for the 2012 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. UCCS finished No. 19 at last year's national championships.

UCCS is ranked fourth in the South Central Region, which is the highest ranking in a regional poll in program history. The top six teams in this year's regional championships will earn a spot at the national championships in Joplin, Mo.

The Mountain Lions open the 2012 home season Saturday morning in the fifth annual Rust-Buster. The men's six-kilometer race begins at 8:45 a.m., at Monument Valley Park in downtown Colorado Springs. Registrations close tonight on DirectAthletics.
