Mountain Lions Start 2012 Practices with Monday Morning Run

published August 10, 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's and women's cross country will open the 2012 season early Monday morning when the team of 39 student-athletes hit the trails at Monument Valley Park in downtown Colorado Springs.

Of the 23 runners on the men's team, four of them were a part of the Mountain Lions' team that placed No. 19 at least year's NCAA Division II National Championships. Senior Mike English led all runners on the team with a No. 47 finish, while Ryan Derrick placed in the top 100 out of 186 qualifiers. Oliver Williams, Ted Schultz and Ian Penn were also a member of that team that braved the snow in Spokane, Wash.

The women will start the season with 16 runners on the roster, with last year's top regional performance Sam Bauer leading the Mountain Lions. All seven runners from the regional team last fall are expected to return for this season. A majority of the squad will be made up of sophomores, with only two seniors - Megan Burrell and Sara Kettelkamp - listed on the roster.

UCCS will open the 2012 season at home with the annual Rust-Buster meet on Sept. 8 at Monument Valley. The Mountain Lions will also host the 2012 RMAC Championships and Colorado USATF Championships on the same course on Oct. 20.
