English Leads UCCS to 19th at Nationals

SPOKANE, Wash. - Junior Mike English took 47th individually at the 2011 NCAA Division-II Cross Country National Championship in Spokane, Wash,. to lead UCCS to a 19th-place finish. He covered the 10,000-meter course in a time of 32 minutes, 17 seconds.

As a team, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs capped the season off at the National Championship race with a 19th-place finish with a team score of 464 points. The 2011 season marked the third time the men's team advanced through the regional to compete at the D-II Cross-Country National Championship.

"It is an honor to be here at the National Championship and Mike English ran phenomenal," said UCCS coach Mark Misch. "We came a long way this year. We had lots of people support us with parents and track team members driving and flying from all over. We hoped for more but the guys gained a lot of good experience."

The other UCCS men finished the national race as follows; Ryan Derrick placed 82nd with a time of 33:25, Casey Weaver placed 107th with a time of 33:50, Ian Penn placed 117th with a time of 34:03, Michael Johnson placed 119th with a time of 34:06, Oliver Williams placed 120th with a time of 34:07 and Ted Schultz with a time of 34:51.

The Spokane weather was polar opposites from when the Mountain Lions ran at the Eric Anderson Invitational, on the same course, back in September. The weather was around record high temperatures in September but for the National Championship race day the weather was cold and snowy.

The Mountain Lion men were assigned to box one at the start line and got off to a weaker start position then they did at the regional race. The middle stretches of the race course, with the snow and the cold, taxed the UCCS men's team pretty heavily. Still, no one quit on the race and everyone finished.

Going into the championship there was a belief that the men's team would be able to finish in the top ten at nationals, but was to not to be on this day. However, any season that ends at the national championship meet is a good year. All season long the UCCS men were nowhere near being ranked in the national top 25 until after the regional race on Nov. 5 in Denver.

The men should be back at nationals again soon. The 2011 team only had only one senior in captain Michael Johnson, the top two UCCS runners and the rest of the top eight runners will be coming back next year.

The 2012 D-II Cross-Country National Championship will be in Joplin, Missouri. Assuming all things go well through the up coming spring and summer there is a strong chance of seeing the UCCS men's team in Joplin.

Now with a bow tied on the cross-country season, the track season will be upon us very soon. It all starts with an indoor track meet at the Air Force Academy on Friday, December 9th.
