UCCS men take first, women second at Tom Strandt Memorial Run
DURANGO, Colo. - The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Men's Cross-Country team won the team competition at Tom Strandt Memorial Run on Saturday. The Mountain Lions finished with a team score of 25. Host, Fort Lewis was second with a team score of 36.
The UCCS women placed second in the team standings with a team score of 34. Fort Lewis won the women's competition. UCCS Senior Christy Severy raced for time this season, which was a big boost for the Mountain Lion women.
"We had a good day; the course was challenging and the weather was good," said UCCS coach Mark Misch. "We came here because the 2007 conference meet was here and both teams ran better today than the teams did at the 2007 RMAC Championship."
Alex Trancoso from Fort Lewis won the individual men's race with a time of 26:40. The top five men pack crossed the finish line 23 second from each other. The UCCS men individually placed out as follow; Mike English (2nd) 27:23, Chris Reynolds (4th) 27:26, Sam Feldotto (5th), Olivier Williams (6th) 27:39, Michael Johnson (8th) 27:46, Joel Kienitz (15th) 28:05, Josh Jones (16th) 29:01, Ted Schultz (20th) 29:20 and Allen Browne (22nd) 29:44.
The womenâ's race winner was Alexis Skarda from Mesa State with a time of 22:44. The Mountain Lion women individual finishers placed out as; Tavia Hammond (6th) 25:22, Kaitlin Frier (7th) 25:36, Alicia Del Pardo (8th) 25:43, Christy Severy (9th) 26:13, Kelsey Berry (15th) 26:46, Sara Kettelkamp (18th) 27:01, Kassie Mazzocco (20th) 27:18, Tracy Falsetto (22nd) 27:32 and Melissa Buchanan (23rd) 27:33.
The Cross-Country teams were happy to be in Durango on Saturday, where the weather was sunny and nice as opposed to freezing rain and windy in Colorado Springs.
The UCCS Cross-Country team will next race in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships at Washington Park in Denver, Colo. on Oct. 24.
