Youthful Mountain Lions get first taste of full-length collegiate race
The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Cross-Country teams raced at the Woody Greeno Invitational at Pioneer Park in Lincoln, Nebraska. The invitational was co-hosted by D-1 University of Nebraska and D-III Nebraska Wesleyan.
Nine of the 17 runners representing UCCS ran in their first full-length college race of 6,000 meters for women and 8,000 meters for men. Also, neither the Mountain Lions women's team or men's team were competing at full strength. Senior Christy Severy was unable to run for women and senior Casey Weaver of the men's team came down sick less then 48 hours to the race. Additionally, Matt Cahalan became injured at about the 5,000 meter mark and was unable to finish. It was disappointing for Cahalan, who is a freshman out of Iowa and was running close to home.
The team scoring was divided into two divisions. The university division is all the NCAA D-1 teams and the collegiate division is all the teams covering NCAA D-II, D-III, NAIA and junior colleges.
The UCCS women's team placed 16th out of 27 overall and 11th out of 22 in the collegiate division. In the collegiate field were Wartburg College and Nebraska Wesleyan, who are two of the best teams at D-III level. Wartburg won the collegiate division team competition with Nebraska winning the university division. The team scoring runners for UCCS women came out as the following; Alicia Del Prado, Jr (46th, 22:52.63), Kaitlin Frier, Jr (62nd, 23:16.58), Tavia Hammond, Sr (96th, 23:57.08), Kelsey Barry, Jr (120th, 24:33.43), Kassie Mazzocco, Fr (124th, 24:36.33), Sara Kettlecamp, Fr (126th, 24:24.73) and Melissa Buchanan, Fr (152nd, 26:07.08). Note: due to a measurement error the women's race was only 5,800 meters
The UCCS men's team placed 17th out of 26 overall and 13th out of 20 in the collegiate division. The overall team competition was won by Colorado Mines, also out of the RMAC, who also won the team competition at the UCCS home invitational two weeks ago. The team scoring runners for UCCS finished with the following; Oliver Williams, So (76th, 27:15.6), Mike English, Fr (79th, 27:19.2), Michael Johnson, So (86th, 27:26.9), Joel Kienitz, Sr (111th, 28:00.25), Chris Reynolds, Jr (117th, 28:05.95), Sam Feldotto, Fr (123rd, 28:09.9) and Ted Schultz, Fr (164th, 28:37.4)
Both cross-country teams next compete on Oct. 10 at Tom Strandt Memorial cross-country meet in Durango, Colo.
