Mountain Lions bust the rust in sweeping first meet of the season

Shannon Payne of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's runner of the week while she and her Mountain Lion teammates climbed to the No. 16 spot in the national poll.

Payne took third at the Woody Greeno Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20 only being beaten by Division I All-Americans Beverly Ramos of Kansas State and Lara Crofford of Nebraska.

The Mountain Lions women's cross country team placed fifth at Woody Greeno and was the highest finishing Division II team.

UCCS also learned Wednesday that the National Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association had ranked the Mountain Lion women 16th nationally. They are ranked fourth in the Central Region.

UCCS men's cross country team placed ninth at Woody Greeno to rank eighth in the Central Region.
