Both Mountain Lions cross country teams tabbed in regional poll

Both of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs' cross country teams were picked among the top 10 teams in the Central Region in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's preseason poll, which was released Tuesday.

The Mountain Lions women's team was picked to finish sixth in the region, while the men's team was picked to finish eighth.

Cross country powerhouse Adams State was picked to finish first in both polls. Western State, which like Adams State and UCCS is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, was picked second in the men's poll and third in the women's. Other RMAC schools named in the women's poll were Mesa State (fifth) and Fort Lewis (10th). On the men's side, Colorado School of Mines (fourth) and Metro State (fifth) were also named.

Adams State's perch atop the poll was no surprise, since the Grizzlies are also the odds-on favorite to be picked first in the national poll. Adams State's women's program has won five straight national titles and 13 of the past 16, while the men's program has taken the No. 1 spot nationally five times in the past 16 years.

Western State has made the national title an RMAC-only club on the women's side, winning the three times that Adams State has fallen short. The Mountaineers men's program has won seven times in the past 16 years.

The USTFCCCA Coaches Cross Country Division II Regional Poll will rank the top 10 men's and women's teams in each of the eight regions and will be released on Tuesdays beginning Sept. 9. The national poll will be released on Wednesdays beginning Sept. 10.
