Cross Country: UCCS Women Ranked No. 11
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs ranks 11th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II women's cross-country preseason polls.
Perennial Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference powerhouses Adams State and Western State ranked Nos. 1 and 3 respectively in the poll. Those two schools have won every national championship since 1996. Sandwiched between the RMAC duo is Harding at No. 2.
After finishing the 2006 season ranked seventh in nation, the Mountain Lions are looking forward to 2007 by welcoming new head coach, Mark Misch, and returning runners Whitney Lund, Christy Severy, and 2007 team captain, Jenna Dorsey-Spitz. Shannon Payne also returns but is expected to undergo an arthroscopic procedure and is likely to miss the 2007 season.
The young UCCS squad includes three seniors, two juniors, two sophomores, and six freshman. First year head coach, Mark Misch, expects a successful season but doesn't read too much into preseason rankings.
"As a team, we try not to pay much attention to rankings. We prefer to focus on our next competition," said UCCS coach Mark Misch. "But it is nice to get that kind of recognition from our peers."
The team travels to Albuquerque, New Mexico to compete in the Lobo Invitational on September 8th. Their first local appearance is September 22nd in the Colorado College Invitational.
