Former Mountain Lion sets course record

By Doug Fitzgerald published July 10, 2007

Former University of Colorado at Colorado Springs runner Aaron Rubalcaba-Lopez set a new course record Sunday in winning the Summer Roundup 12K trail run at Bear Creek Park.

Rubalcabo-Lopez's time of 45 minutes, 20 seconds put him almost two minutes ahead of runner-up John Gaudette. Rubalcaba-Lopez, who was regarded as a hill-climbing specialist as a member of the UCCS cross country and track teams from 2003-07, thrived on the course that took runners up nearly 1,000 feet in elevation during the opening 3.7 miles before turning around and descending the same route.

Another former UCCS athlete, Natascha Vander Molen, took 36th among women competitors with a time of 1:09:37. Vander Molen competed in both cross country and tennis at UCCS.
