By Doug Fitzgerald published September 29, 2005

Shannon Payne was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week, the conference announced Thursday. Payne and golfer Chase Wortmann are the first UCCS athletes to win the RMAC's top individual award three times in a season in any sport.

The sophomore from Franktown, Colo., claimed her second first-place finish of the season as she clocked a time of 22:21.70 over six kilometers to win the Colorado College Invitational in Colorado Springs.

Her 44.6-second victory over teammate Sarah Shepard led the Mountain Lions to a perfect score of 15 points at the meet hosted by Colorado College at Monument Valley Park.

Payne, who also has a third place finish in her other meet, has now been named as the RMAC Runner of the Week during each of the past two weeks and three times this season.
