UCCS men take sixth at regionals
Aaron Rubalcaba-Lopez and Brad Winn finished 17th and 20th respectively at the North Central Region Cross Country Championships Saturday at Hays, Kan., but that wasnâ€TMt enough to lift the Mountain Lions to a berth at nationals.
Rubalcaba-Lopez covered the 10-kilometer course at Fort Hays State University in 32 minutes, 35.50 seconds. Winn crossed the finish line in 32:59.30.
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals Adams State, Western State and Colorado School of Mines took the top three spots. Minnesota Mankato and South Dakota tied for fourth, with Mankato advancing to nationals by virtue of winning the tiebreaker.
UCCS, which was ranked as high as No. 22 nationally this season, was regarded as a longshot to qualify for nationals. The North central is by far the toughest cross country region in NCAA Division II.
Jay Luna was third among Mountain Lions runners, 30th overall, with a time of 33:32.30. Jason Braun took 40th (34:08.10) and Kyle Reno was 61st (34:55.60). Gabe Small and Kevin Moulton also ran but did not factor into the team score.
