UCCS Knocks Off Regional Rival at Boulder Meet

By Doug Fitzgerald published October 2, 2004

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women's cross country team scored an important victory towards its regional aspirations at the Rocky Mountain Shootout Saturday in Boulder, Colo.

The Mountain Lions finished second to Western State in the Non-Division I bracket. More importantly, CU-Colorado Springs beat Colorado School of Mines â€" ranked No. 10 nationally and a key regional competitor for a spot at nationals. The Mountain Lions had lost to Mines at the Woody Greeno Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Sept. 18.

Shannon Payne had the best race of her young career. The freshman from Franktown, Colo., led CU-Colorado Springs by finishing fifth in the division and 10th overall. Sarah Shepard and Tina Gray were sixth and seventh in the division respectively. Also competing for CU-Colorado Springs were Megan Lund (17th), Kari Samuelson (20th), Chelsey Cerrillo (22nd) and Jessica Urban (26th). Cerrillo and Urban did not count towards the team standings.

The meet, hosted by the University of Colorado at Boulder, featured three Division I teams and eight from non-Division I schools.

For the third time this year, CU-Colorado Springs outpointed Division I Northern Colorado.
