Kirchoff Earns RMAC Defensive Player of the Week Award
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Colorado Colorado Springs junior guard Abby Kirchoff earned RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after she helped lead the Mountain Lions to a 2-0 weekend to close out the 2013 calendar year. It's the second defensive player of the week award in her career.
Kirchoff averaged eight rebounds per game and came one rebound shy of a double-double in a 77-55 win against New Mexico Highlands on Friday night. UCCS held the Cowgirls to 27.3 percent from the field, the lowest by a Mountain Lion opponent this season.
Kirchoff brought down seven rebounds in a 79-75 overtime win on Saturday night against Western New Mexico. She recorded six of her rebounds on the defensive side, matched her season-high of three steals and added a blocked shot against the Mustangs. Kirchoff also reached 1,000 career points, set the UCCS single-game record with 16 made free throws and scored 35 points in the win.
The Mountain Lions have held their last four opponents to less than 30 percent from the three-point line, while on the offensive side, UCCS has scored 75 or more points in its last three games.
The Mountain Lions will be off from practice and team activities until next week for the Division II holiday break. UCCS will be back on the court on Jan. 4, for a 5:30 p.m., game at Colorado State-Pueblo.
