UCCS Moves to 3-1 on Strong Shooting
NAMPA, Idaho - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team (3-1) shot 56 percent from the field and had five student-athletes finish with 10 or more points in a 95-70 victory against Northwest Nazarene (1-3) tonight at the Johnson Sports Center. The 3-1 start to the season matches the best start in program history.
UCCS used a 22-2 run during a seven minute period early in the game to take a 28-11 lead against the Crusaders at the 10-minute mark. The Mountain Lions continued to add to its lead and limited Northwest Nazarene to free throws as its only points for more than 12 minutes, until the Crusaders made a jumper with 4:21 left in the period with UCCS ahead by more than 20 points.
Dalton Patten led both teams with 10 points at halftime and was four-of-five from the field and two-of-two at the free throw line. UCCS shot 49 percent in the field half, and held Northwest Nazarene to eight percent at the three-point line and 26 percent overall from the field.
The Mountain Lions never let the game get closer than 20 points in the second half and improved their shooting to 66 percent in the final 20 minutes. Tim Haas scored 10 points in the second half off the bench, helped by a pair of three-pointers.
Every Mountain Lion that played ended up with points, and Patten led UCCS in scoring for the second time this season with 18 points. Haas finished with 15 points as the Mountain Lions held a 44-to-15 advantage in bench points. Derrick White and Alex Welsh scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Welsh also recorded a team-high nine rebounds to finish one short of the double-double.
The 3-1 season start is the best since the start of the 2007-08 season, and is the sixth 3-1 start in program history. UCCS has outrebounded each of its opponents this season, and posted its best single-field goal shooting performance since Feb. 5, 2011 (56.6%).
Up Next: The Mountain Lions will enjoy the Thanksgiving break with no games to prepare for the start of the RMAC season. UCCS travels to Fort Lewis on Dec. 6 for a 7:30 p.m., game at Whalen Gymnasium.
