White Scores 26 in Final Exhibition Tuneup
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Derrick White led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs for the second straight time in the exhibition season with 26 points as the Mountain Lions (0-2 exhibition) fell 99-70 to Colorado State (1-0) tonight in Moby Arena.
White finished nine-of-18 from the field and went six-of-seven from the free throw line to lead both teams in scoring. He provided a team-high four assists and brought down five rebounds, good for second on the team tonight.
The Mountain Lions made three-pointers on their two opening possessions for an early 6-0 lead, and maintained a two possession lead for nearly three minutes in the first half. After the Rams narrowed the UCCS lead down to a point at the 16:34 mark, White took advantage of back-to-back fastbreak opportunities to push the lead back to five points and to force a Colorado State timeout.
The Rams took their first lead of the game with 14:32 left in the first half and TreShawn Wilford tied it with a pair of free throws with 13:36 remaining. Colorado State scored on its next three possessions and gradually expanded its lead to 12 points at the 1:36 mark in the half. UCCS cut the margin down to seven points by halftime at 46-39 after a layup from Alan Paul.
Colorado State gradually expanded upon its lead in the second half, helped by 58 percent shooting from the field.
While the game won't count for UCCS in the win-loss records or for season statistics, the 70 points tonight and the 81 points against Wyoming mark the first time since the 2008-09 season when the Mountain Lions recorded back-to-back games with at least 70 points to open a season (including any preseason exhibition contests).
Alex Welsh led the rebounding effort for the Mountain Lions with seven tonight and added eight points. Paul scored nine points and shot 67 percent from the field.
UCCS opens the 2013-14 regular season on Tuesday night against Johnson & Wales. Tipoff from the Gallogly Events Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
