Mountain Lions on the Road to Face Mustangs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will begin to starting playing teams for the second time this season when the Mountain Lions (7-10 / 6-7 RMAC) takes on Western New Mexico (8-10 / 5-8 RMAC) tonight in Silver City, N.M. Tip-off from the WNMU Fieldhouse is at 5:30 p.m.
UCCS won the first meeting between the two teams in a 79-75 overtime game on Dec. 21 in the Gallogly Events Center. Kirchoff scored 35 points in that game to reach 1,000 career points in the second overtime win against the Mustangs in the last three meetings. The Mountain Lions won 80-73 in overtime the last time the two teams played in Silver City on Dec. 15, 2012.
The Mountain Lions are one game ahead of the Mustangs in the RMAC standings, and a win for UCCS would provide the first tiebreaker against Western New Mexico if the teams are tied at the end of the season. If the season ended today, the Mountain Lions would be in the RMAC Shootout as the seventh or eighth seed, and the Mustangs would be one of the first teams left out.
Kirchoff is ranked in the top 15 of Division II in scoring and free throw shooting, and is the defending RMAC Offensive Player of the Week. She's scored at least 10 points in the last 23 games, and at least 20 points in 10 games this season. Kirchoff is fifth in UCCS career records with 1,139 points and has 385 points this season, 15 shy of entering the top 10 records for points in a season.
UCCS will be going for its first three-game winning streak of the season tonight. The Mountain Lions have never lost to the Mustangs in Silver City in six games since Western New Mexico rejoined the RMAC in the 2006-07 season. The Mustangs are 7-3 at home this season and have won four of their last five home games in the new year.
