Mountain Lions Win Second Straight
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Abby Kirchoff scored 16 second-half points to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team (7-10 / 6-7 RMAC) to its second straight win in a 65-60 victory against Chadron State (3-14 / 3-10 RMAC) tonight. The win moved Head Coach Corey Laster alone into second in UCCS career coaching win records with his 53rd win in his fourth season.
Jeri Pikul added 12 points and made a team-high three assists. Kirchoff and Kellie Kruger both led the defense with seven rebounds as the Mountain Lions brought down a season-high 54 rebounds and finished with a 10 rebound against the Eagles.
Chadron State scored the first seven points of the game before Krueger put UCCS on the scoreboard six minutes into the game. Sam Patterson tied the game at 15-15 with a layup with 9:54 left in the first half, and the Mountain Lions took the lead on the next possession on a jumper from Gabby Ramirez. Ramirez finished the half with a team-high eight points, all scored within a three-minute span in the period.
The Mountain Lions never trailed in the second half, although the Eagles did pull within one point at 54-53 with 4:46 to play. UCCS made six of its last seven free throws in the game and held Chadron State to a pair of field goals in the final three minutes to claim the 65-60 win.
Kirchoff led the Mountain Lion scoring effort with 18 points for her 23rd straight game with double-digit points. She went perfect at the free throw line for the seventh time this season. Kirchoff also improved to third in junior season scoring records and is 15 points away from moving into the top 10 for overall season records.
UCCS held Chadron State to 19 percent from the three-point line, and held its opponent below 20 percent from the arc for the second straight night. The Eagles went one-of-10 from the three-point line in the second half.
Up Next: The Mountain Lions will return to the road for games in New Mexico next weekend. UCCS will begin the trip with Western New Mexico on Friday night. The Mountain Lions defeated the Mustangs 79-75 in overtime when the two teams met earlier this season in Colorado Springs on Dec. 21.
