Kirchoff's Double-Double Leads UCCS Past Black Hills State
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Abby Kirchoff earned her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and came three assists away from the second triple-double in program history, as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (6-10 / 5-7 RMAC) defeated Black Hills State (10-6 / 9-3 RMAC) 71-60 tonight on Blackout Night in the Gallogly Events Center.
She extended her double-digit scoring streak to 22 consecutive games. It was her first career double-double in a conference regular season game her third overall.
UCCS held Black Hills State without field goals for a pair of extended stretches early in the first half to build a seven-point lead at 20-13 with 9:06 left in the half. The Yellow Jackets cut the Mountain Lion lead down to one possession twice in the rest of the half, but could never tie or retake the lead as UCCS led 32-28 at the break.
The Mountain Lions scored the first six points of the second half with points on their first three possessions and maintained at least a five-point lead for the first six minutes. Black Hills State scored nine straight points to retake the lead at 51-50 off of free throws with 7:06 to play, but UCCS answered back with an eight-point rally to secure the 71-60 win in front of a near-capacity crowd.
Kirchoff led both teams in rebounding and with seven assists, her best performance since Nov. 16 against California Baptist. Sammi Gentile scored a season-high 12 points off the bench and Gabby Ramirez added 10 points in her best scoring performance in more than a month.
UCCS shot a season-high 85.7 percent from the free-throw line (12-of-14), and forced 19 turnovers to match a season-high. The Mountain Lions also shot 46.7 percent from the three-point line (seven-of-15) for the best home performance of the season.
