Women Face Black Hills State on Blackout Night
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will look to get back into the win column tonight when the Mountain Lions (5-10 / 4-7 RMAC) face the Black Hills State (10-5 / 9-2 RMAC) at 5:30 p.m., at the Gallogly Events Center. The game will be part of the annual Blackout Night festivities with the UCCS student body.
Abby Kirchoff moved into fifth in UCCS career scoring records last Saturday night against Colorado Christian, and will begin the climb to fourth this weekend. Her 1,102 points in two-and-a-half seasons is 119 points behind Tara Newton's 1,221 points from the 1991-92 through 1993-94 seasons. Kirchoff is ranked seventh in Division II with 23.2 points per game, and if she can maintain that average through the rest of the season, she will set the program scoring average record by nearly four points per game.
The Mountain Lions have outrebounded three of their last four opponents, led by the improved consistency on the boards by Jessika Kienitz. She's averaging 4.5 rebounds per game in that span, an improvement by nearly a rebound compared to the rest of the season. She made a season-high eight rebounds against Colorado Mines last Friday.
Jeri Pikul will likely make her 99th career appearance in a Mountain Lion uniform tonight, and another appearance tomorrow will make her the 10th student-athlete in program history with 100 games played. She's made 68 starts in her 98 appearances during her four-year career.
Black Hills State comes into tonight's game with a nine-game conference winning streak and tied for second in the RMAC standings. Chelsey Biegler leads the Yellow Jackets with 14.1 points per game and is shooting 43 percent in the last five games.
